About university of Port Harcourt

INSIDE UNIPORT

The University of Port Harcourt was established in1975, and has ever since had a reputation as one of the most premiere Educational Institute in Nigeria, and once ranked 6th in Africa and 1st in Nigeria, by Times Higher Education in 2015.

Uniport has produced many alumni over the years that have stood out in society; this includes the lives of former president of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Former Gov of Rivers State Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, and from arts and entertainment industry Rita Dominic, Monalisa Chinda and many more.

It is our school that endows us with right values at an early age, Uniport gives its graduate a certificate in character and in learning and its motto is Enlightenment and self reliance.

I had admired Uniport when I was still a UDPS student in 2012, I should be awarded aspirant of that year shaa (laugh, laugh)
Uniport has been an institute that motivates, empowers and produces outstanding students in Nigeria and make them recognizable worldwide.

A week ago Uniport did her 43rd matriculation ceremony; from research, I found out that over 8,000 students were given admission with 8 batches released, yes! Over 8000 student, this number isn’t too much because during my matriculation we were over 8000, but when I think they would merge 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 together then that’s a problem.

Last year, march 4th 2021 Year 1B were matriculated and after their First Semester exams they were sent home to wait for 5months so that they could join them with 2021/2022 set. In secondary school, this is the same thing as repeating a class,

am I the only one that feel like this current Year One would be overcrowded? I don’t know the exact number of student admitted in 2020/2021 but I know the least most Universities admit in a year is 5000. Now if we assumed that 5000 were given admission, adding 5000 to 8000 that is 13,000 remember, this is just an assumption!

They intend to rush the current Year One with their First Semester exams so that by resumption both the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 can resume Second Semester Year One at the same time. I thought “proper preparation prevent poor performance” well this is in no way Proper!
How do we expect students to do their best in a few months under pressure? I personally think a lot of the students would be subjected to cramming as the only option, this definitely wasn’t planned well, if the foundation is weak how do we expect the building to stand?

Speaking of building, I know a few lecture halls that can contain over 2000 students, even the new tetfund buildings cannot be compared to the crowd, does Uniport even have proper Public address system to teach student of that number? I remember how tough Year One was 4yrs ago in college hall, with all science students coming for CHM 130, we managed, a lot of student had divided attention, there was overflow outside, and the microphone wasn’t high enough, in some occasions there was no Public address system, I wouldn’t say I enjoyed that period. I hope it is better now! Now, bear in mind that Year 2, Year 3, Year 4…would be resuming soon for Second semester. Even after Interns and IT student leave school to different environment for their training, that would be just be a few percentage compared to everyone, even at that, there are still not enough halls, thank God for the up coming building projects in Uniport..

The fact that some students were given admission a few days to matriculation was disturbing, it wasn’t the student fault His or Her name came out in the 8th batch but imagining having a month to prepare for an exam; how many classes would you attend before your exams? How do you make up for missed test?

Do you still have 75% attendance to qualify you to write your exam? Have you done clearance? Paid acceptance fee? Paid your School charge? Etc.
Uniport exams are not common entrance exam? I can attest to that, some people would say Year One results can determine if you would likely graduate as a 1st class student in the next 4, 5, or 6 Year, I personally think it definitely would set the pace.
I heard of ASUU strike http://www.vanguardngr.com check it out!
Well, I pray for grace for this current Year One to finish strong, I am thankful their courses are basic, though this doesn’t cover for the rush and come to think of it Jamb registration form is out!
My thoughts are, would Uniport also provide space for another Year One?

I think they shouldn’t give admission for the next one year at least, there should be Order, Economist would say, Scale of preference, I think they should priorities providing the current students the best learning environment possible, I don’t think anyone would love stress, the unnecessary pressure is too much both for the students and the lecturers, and a lot of complications can occur from missing results to little or no class room, the Non Teaching Staff would have to work extra diligently to manage every student.

I am not trying to convince the New Year One student not to read and blame it on someone or something, truth is, if you succeed everyone would want to know how you did it, but if you don’t succeed no one would ask why, even if you have a thousand reasons to present as proof of why you didn’t succeed.

So, read more because you are already in the story and we can’t stop what has already happened in this case but we can prevent further happenings that are not favorable.

My advice, every student should acquire a skill! Because really the certificate wouldn’t separate you, I mean everyone would graduate with the same certificate, whether first class upper or third class lower, I believe it’s your skill, talent and gifts that distinguishes each individual!

School is not a scam!!! And Congratulations to the newly matriculated students of Uniport, I wish you the best!
