asuu strike update today 2022

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) commenced its ongoing strike on February,14th, 2022. Since then, Nigerian university students have been on the streets with its attendant negative consequences on the children and the parents.

According to the National president of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, their core reasons for the strike action includes :

<> The release by the Federal Government the revitalization fund for the universities

<> The release of the earned allowances of the university lecturers

<> The renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement

<> The deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution Payment Platform(UTAS) which have passed the tests conducted on it twice by the National Information Technology Development Agency(NTDA) by 90% and is currently undergoing the third test.

<> The University Vice Chancellors should be given the mandate to employ professors without the approval of the Head of Service as set out in the Federal Character Commission but strictly on merit.

Though the Federal Government have released the sum of 34 billion naira for the payment of the minimum wage consequential adjustments from 2019, ASUU as a body have continued to maintain that they will not suspend the strike until their core demands are met

The President of Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba have stated that they will soon join ASUU in the ongoing strike so as to call the attention of the federal government to the situation and fast track the resolution of the conflict

Professor Osodeke insists that though the fedreal government have stopped the payment of the striking lecturer's salaries since march, they still remain strong and undeterred till they achive their goal. He said they are currently engaged in discussion and ongoing negotiation with the seven - man committee set up by the federal government chaired by Professor Briggs who have been mandated to :

<> Review the proposed  FGN/ASUU Agreement while liasing and consulting with the relevant stakeholders to finalise the position of the federal government in the draft

<> View the renegotiated agreement and workable terms in the 2009 agreement with other university based unions

<> To negotiate and recommend any other issues the committee deems relevant to the repositioning of the National Universities commission for global competitiveness

He also further said that the UTAS which the government have refused to accept have passed the conducted tests in flying colours and the National Information Technology Development Agency will start testing the Integrated Payroll and Personel Information System(IPPIS) by next week as can be seen on their website. He promised to come to the press and address anxious Nigerians next week after the negotiation between the Briggs - led committee and ASUU

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education Professor Adamu Adamu have stated in Abuja during his appearance before the State Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund that the ongoing strike will be called off within the next 1 week. He also stated that the executive arm of the federal government have commenced plans to see that they abide by and honour the agreement  between the Federal government and ASUU

We pray to hear the much expected positive news on the resumption date of academic activities in our higher institutions soonest so that students can go back to classes.
