How to Know Original and Adulterated Honey

Honey is a very common food used almost on a daily basis in most households. It is a very nutritious and syrupy liquid made by Honey Bees from the nectar of plants. It is mostly used as sweetner in food items. Contains many essential elements like Calcium, Iron, vitamins amongst others

The market is now saturated with different kinds of adulterated honey filled with saccharine and colour that is harmful to the body. It is therefore imperative that these tests are carried out to ensure the originality of purchased honey before consumption:

How to Know Original Honey

• Mix a tablespoon of honey into a glass of water. Add 2 to 3 drops of vinegar. The mixture will not foam if it is original honey

• Dip a matchstick in honey and light it. If it burns, then it is original. Adulterated honey will not burn because of the moisture introduced in it during adulteration

•  A teaspoon of original honey will not dissolve instantly when dropped inside a glass of water but will only lump up and settle at the bottom of the cup unless stirred

• Original honey will become crunchy within minutes when spread on a slice of bread

• Original honey when mixed with an equal amount of methylated spirit will settle at the bottom of the mixing bowl

• Original honey when placed on the thumb will not spill or be runny like other liquids because it is thick and sticks to applied surfaces

• The taste of original honey does not linger much on applied surface unlike the adulterated one that is filled with sugar with a deep lingering taste

• Original honey poured on a blotting paper like A4 and other such paper or on a white cloth will not get absorbed nor leave stain when removed

• Original honey when heated up will caramelise fast and will not foam or bubble
