The Oyo Empire was one of the most powerful kingdoms in West Africa, located in present-day southwestern Nigeria. Founded around the 14th century by the Yoruba people, it grew into a dominant empire through its strong cavalry, effective leadership, and extensive trade networks.
The empire was ruled by the Alaafin (king) and supported by a council of chiefs known as the Oyo Mesi, which helped maintain a balanced system of government. Oyo became wealthy by controlling important trade routes and exchanging goods with neighboring regions.
At its peak, the empire expanded across much of present-day Nigeria and influenced surrounding territories. However, internal conflicts and external attacks weakened Oyo, leading to its decline in the early 19th century.
Despite its fall, the Oyo Empire left a lasting impact on Yoruba culture, politics, and traditions, making it one of the most significant civilizations in African history.
