Fiji faces challenges such as rising fuel costs, dependence on imported fuel, waste management problems, and climate change impacts. One possible solution is converting human waste and organic waste into energy using biogas systems.
Human waste can be processed in sealed tanks where bacteria break it down to produce methane-rich biogas. This gas can then be used for cooking, heating, or generating electricity. The remaining material can also be used as fertilizer.
For Fiji, waste-to-energy systems could reduce fuel imports, improve waste management, lower pollution, provide rural energy solutions, and support agriculture. Small-scale community biogas projects may be more practical for villages and farms.
However, challenges include high setup costs, infrastructure needs, technical skills requirements, environmental concerns, and public acceptance. With proper planning and management, human waste-to-energy technology could help Fiji improve energy security and sustainability.
