Why do I learn too slowly?
why do I find what I've read unfathomable?
Must I be mocked by others for making spelling errors?
Am I not a human being?
I am sick and tired of being treated like dirt and unimportant !!!
"I'm giving up, I'm not going to school anymore", troubled Sandra said.
I heard all these from Sandra, the troubled young girl beside my house. I was so disheartened on hearing her lament those discouraging words.
What could be wrong with this young girl? Do check this out 👇.
It's DYSLEXIA.
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects your ability to read, spell, write and speak.
A Dyslexic person finds difficulty in differentiating letters, unable to understand what has been read, inability to spell correctly.
Despite these facts, they are smart, sensitive, and hardworking. They struggle to do things right which makes them great and unique.
Dyslexia might be hard to spot until a child starts school. It's a disorder that could be found in both young and old. Children with Dyslexia have trouble processing and connecting letters and sounds. Take for example, to someone with dyslexia, the word "cat" might read as "tac". Reading can be a slow process as a result of mix-ups.
Dyslexic people can't differentiate letters. Also, have trouble sounding out words. Write letters or numbers backward such as "b" instead of "d".
Back to the gist 👇.
I later found out that Sandra is Dyslexic. she has difficulty in differentiating numbers. She can't remember the names or words, often say "um" or "uh" a lot ( trying to remember).
She complained of how her mum out of annoyance, compared her to siblings. Her mother also threatened to reject her birthed her if she didn't change.
I stopped her amidst tears and advised her not to give up on her potential. I promised to lend $ listening ears.
I started helping her differentiate letters. I remember the letter "N" from "U", using different strategies. Only one yield ( letter "N" face down while letter "U" face up).
Funny really?. I am glad she's improving and her mother is super proud of her.
Yes, being Dyslexic only means you learn differently. You shouldn't be browbeaten, depressed, or discouraged because you're Dyslexic. It shouldn't result in melancholy.
There are many celebrities with Dyslexia. Given what we know now, many prominent persons may have had Dyslexia including Napoleon, Winston Churchill, Saint Teresa, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Edison.
Listen, dear esteemed readers, note that.
Being Dyslexic doesn't mean you ain't intelligent it only portends a LEARNING DIFFERENCE.
Dyslexic people shouldn't be treated like dirt they have blood running in their veins.
People with Dyslexia should be shown more love.
That you are Dyslexic doesn't mean you ain't smart, it only means you learn differently!
