Blend In, Stay Alert: Travel Security Tips to Prevent Trouble

Kidnap, ransom and extortion are on the rise worldwide. Most kidnap and ransom situations can be avoided with a little self-awareness. Being aware of who you are, where you are going, and how others might perceive you when get to your destination can make a big difference. Do not standout by wearing clothes and jewelry that are culturally inappropriate and can draw attention to you. Observe others and blend in as much as possible. Constantly re-evaluate your sorroundings and the people around. Don't be consumed with your cell phone unless you are in a familiar place or a secure area.

Whether traveling abroad on business or pleasure, being familiar with the sorroundings is critical to personal security and wellbeing. Identify and use ATMs that are in busy locations but avoid it's use at night.

In order to mitigate personal security issues and potential kidnap situations you should consider changing your routine throughout your trip. If possible identify and use different routes to your hotel and place of work. If you drive rental car, consider jumping in a cab or walking to the destination if it is not too far away. Endeavour not to work-out, eat, drive, or go to work at same time everyday. Carry very little cash with you and be aware of people around you when you complete a financial transaction at a store or restaurant.
