Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has defended his wealth, saying it was acquired through legitimate means, primarily investing his earnings from a transport business he ran with his wife. Sonko, who was facing corruption charges, said his source of wealth was well documented and not from drug sales or murders.
He said he invested his money in real estate and vehicles, among other ventures, and now owns over 1,000 properties and 150 cars. Sonko has been vocal about his desire for justice and has taken his battle to the East African Court of Justice, where he was seeking the reinstatement of his position as governor. He was also been involved in philanthropy, giving back to the community and supporting his wife's business of importing double-decker buses.
Sonko rose to power in 2017, taking over from Evans Kidero as Nairobi governor. He was later impeached in 2020 and has since been charged with corruption. His case is still ongoing, and he has maintained his innocence throughout. Sonko's case highlights the ongoing battle against corruption in Kenya's political sphere, with several high-ranking officials facing charges in recent years
