Pesisir Selatan Regency borders Padang City to the north, Solok Regency and Jambi Province to the east, Bengkulu Province to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the west.
The population of Pesisir Selatan Regency in 2008 was 433,181 (213,462 males and 219,719 females). Of these, 97,978 households comprise 30,649 households (50%) living in poverty. The administrative region consists of 15 sub-districts (three sub-districts were expanded on July 16, 2012) and 182 nagari (village units) (village units were expanded in 2011). The majority of the population of Pesisir Selatan relies on food crop agriculture, fisheries, and trade. Other potential resources include mining, plantations, and tourism.
The plantation sector, particularly oil palm plantations, has developed rapidly over the past ten years, located in the Pancung Soal, Basa Ampek Balai, and Lunang Silaut sub-districts. Several national investors have been involved, operating under both nucleus and plasma plantation schemes. A CPO palm oil processing plant is now established in Pancung Soal sub-district, with a production capacity of 4,000 tons per day.
Pesisir Selatan boasts beautiful and enchanting natural scenery. The Mandeh area, for example, is now included by the central government in the National Tourism Development Master Plan (RIPPNAS) representing western Indonesia.
Other potential tourist areas include the Root Bridge, Bayang Sani Waterfall, Cerocok Beach in Painan, Langkisau Hill, Nyiur Melambai, and several historical sites, such as Cingkuak Island (Cengco), the remains of the Inderapura Kingdom, and the Mandeh Rubiah Lunang Gadang House.
If all of Pesisir Selatan's tourism potential can be managed professionally, it will certainly become a reliable source of regional revenue (PAD) in the future. Therefore, the Pesisir Selatan Regency government is open to investors interested in investing in this region.
