Have you guys seen even Medical Doctors are not quick in advising you to go to the hospital unless they are strangers and they want to mint cash from you or milk your insurance dry?
Sometimes back, I went to Nairobi Hospital for a small check up after experiencing a constant severe headache for close to 8 days. I was in the neighbourhood by then and I decided to pop in and know what was going on. Outside the ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY building, I ran into this friend of mine. A medical doctor by profession. I last met him in 2020 before I relocated to Mandera. So after an exchange of pleasantries, he inquired, "what are you doing here ?" And I told him of my concern- the headache.
He asked me, "do you normally drink water?" And I told him yeah I do it pretty much. Then he asked me, "Do you regularly exercise?" And I answered in affirmative to which he then asked, "Alii you have stress?" And I looked away. "Tell me the truth, what kind of stress do you have?" He insisted. I told him nothing much but some discrepancies between expectations and reality, some small setbacks of life here and there but nothing is worrying me much and I am leading a very positive life. After inquiring , he told me, "just do the checkup and if they won't find anything, call me, I will prescribe a good painkiller for you. And don't come to hospital regularly," he warned me. We parted ways.
There is another friend of mine, an M.O at Mandera Referal hospital. Whenever I call him to report my illness, he will listen to me keenly without interruption. He will then laugh and tell me, "you go and marry. If you marry you will be fine." We will both laugh out loud and I will consequently forget about the issue.
Normalize making friends outside your family, tribe profession. Such friends will always come in handy when you least expect them.
