Karen Coffman's husband expressed concern about her financial future as he neared death from complications of a brain tumor. However, just two weeks before he passed away, Karen, a 61-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, bought a scratch-off lottery ticket that unexpectedly won her $1 million.
"When I shared the news of the prize with him, he thought I was joking," Karen said, recalling her husband Robert's disbelief. She believes his worries may have somehow influenced the fortunate outcome. Reflecting emotionally on the event at a ceremony where she received a symbolic check from lottery officials at the gas station where she made the purchase, Karen expressed gratitude for what she sees as a spiritual intervention.
A longtime resident of Freeport near Pittsburgh, Karen described herself as a regular lottery player who prefers scratch-off tickets. Overwhelmed with disbelief upon realizing her win, she confirmed it with a station employee before sharing the news with her husband at home.
Opting for a lump sum payment, Karen recently retired from the senior care industry and plans to use her winnings to treat family members to a luxurious Disney vacation. She also intends to move to Florida to avoid the cold Pennsylvania winters, expressing her dislike for winter weather.
Looking ahead, Karen plans to continue playing the lottery once things settle down.
