Home sweet home

Everyone must have a home. We are born in families which have different cultural background. But all in all we are social beings. We like to socialize and commune as a people. This gives us an upper hand compared to other living creatures.

I come from a community which has its unique way of socializing. We have a culture of living with your parents until such times you are capable of building your own house. We used to build thatched houses but as things change corrugated ironsheets took over. In my community you ought to build your first house at your father's compound before you become old enough to get your own home! This first house is known as 'simba' and it must be built according to laid down procedure.

The eldest son is required to build his simba first followed by other siblings. The arrangement of these houses also mattered. For instance, the first born must build on the right side of the father's house as it was the side set aside for the parent's bedroom. The next son will have to go the other side interchanging untill all sons have built their simba.

As a son, you door should never be directly opposite the gate as that isn't your home. Simba should also not be too close to the parents house. This cultural practices are still followed and they bring sanity and organization in the homestead. They also promoted respect to the elder. What a good life
