HYGIENE

All over the world, people are taught of the need to be clean. We are even told that cleanliness is next to godliness. Common are sights of people going to the bathroom to clean themselves. This is external cleaning, and it contributes to hygiene. When we drink water, we help to clean the internal economy of the body. Water helps us to flush out toxins through sweating, u*rination and d*efecation.

The clothes we put on ought to be clean. They also need to be well-ironed. And the shoes, polished. Utensils in the house should be cleaned thoroughly, the house swept, furniture – as well as everything else – well-arranged.

We tend to forget a very important aspect: emotional hygiene. Many people forget to clean their emotional environment. This folder contains attitudes, grudges that have been preserved for ages until they stink while clogging the emotional storage, retaliations and disappointments. With the storage full of this trash, we think of infecting others, recruiting them to share our emotional corruption and tranquility-bankruptcy. We must clean this closet, as summarized by the song ‘From a Distance’:

            From a distance

            You look like my friend

Even though we are at war

            From a distance

            I cannot comprehend

What all this fighting is for

                        (Bette Midler)
