Kenyan Politics: The Hallmark of Civil Morbidity

Whereas politics offer solution to social problems in other jurisdictions that we hear and read about, in Kenya it has become the problem itself. Never has it been the shortcut to any paradise in this far end of the world.

bWe live like children of a lesser god; we are not only black unlike others but also got civilised late and have created for us a different universe that is 'third-world' to others.

Maybe, politics has a different meaning in Kenya. It might probably be the shortcut to riches for a few and suffering for a majority. Or the security guarantee to loot, steal, maim, kill and break laws that we the poor people know how powerful they are.

It is the political class that steals uncountable resources from the people they are supposed to rule; and because we have entrusted them with the role of amending and making laws for us, they have gone for those (laws) that favour them. Ours has now become a country of who do you know or who is close to you. And since politics is not a game of politicians alone, we too are accomplices in our own misfortunes who are known to cry the loudest.

It is worrying to see how much we lose to politics simply because we have the bad manners of disrespecting the law. Whereas it is our right to periodically hold elections to choose our representatives, we have known how easy it is to get rich by hiking the price of elections. In Africa, our elections are the most expensive; an exercise we don't even do correctly. What is the essence of the expense?

As we gather to listen to politicians who insult each other before us instead of using the platforms to campaign, some innocent men and women die, are teargassed or arrested for practising their right. Young kids and innocent women are victimized for being innocent. Elections to us is a crisis that will certainly give birth to misery for a period of not less than five years. Whom we elect depends on how corrupt he is or how much he has stolen from us. Our bread is snatched from us and all we get in return is a section of the hard shell.

Our politicians have arranged us like a pyramid, where they occupy the fee top slots and pour resources down like water. The base is too big and only drops get to us down here. The good hospitals, schools and police stations exist on the top. At the base, it is us and our makers.

As long as we keep making the wrong choices when given chance, we shall forever live in poverty where we are born to suffer by all means. Here comes another chance for us to elect leaders; if we instead elect dealers again we shall live to regret.
