MCHAMA AGO HANYELI

Mchama ago hanyeli huenda akauya papo is a Swahili proverb that, loosely translated, means that he that moves from a house does not soil the place because fate may, in the famous twist of Karma, return him/her to that place. It means that we should strive to leave a place better than we found it.

This proverb applies to those people who do, or have intentions to do bad stuff to those who have helped them. They may need them later. The proverb does not discriminate in terms of age or sex. It cuts across sex and age.

There are two English proverbs that communicate a similar message: be good to people on your way up the ladder because you’ll need them on your way down and do not burn bridges after crossing the river.
