Murder in a China Boutique shop
Clothing or boutique Store Owner's Murder in the Middle of the Night: Multiple Relationships Identified, the Final Truth is Chilling
In the winter of 2011, a shocking murder occurred in Tangjiang Town, Nankang City, Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province. A man frantically called the police, reporting that his 27-year-old wife, Jiang Yunlu, had been murdered in their clothing store. Upon arriving at the scene, police found the store in disarray; the deceased was lying on the second-floor stairwell, and used protective gear was found at the scene. The entire incident had a chilling atmosphere.
According to the husband, the couple had been married for five years and had one child. His wife usually lived at the store and managed the business, and the couple only saw each other about once a week. At the time of the incident, Jiang Yunlu was four months pregnant. He had been calling his wife repeatedly that day without answering. He rushed to the store and discovered the tragedy, immediately calling the police.
Police investigation revealed clear signs of ransacking in the second-floor room. Two boxes of protective gear were found on the bedside table, and similar packaging was found in the bathroom trash can. A red plastic bag near the door contained approximately 8,000 yuan in cash. The autopsy revealed that Jiang Yunlu died between 8:30 PM and 10:30 PM, and had been sexually assaulted before her death, but no male bodily fluids were found in her body. Furthermore, her cell phone and a gold necklace were missing, and the computer in the store showed signs of tampering, yet it wasn't taken. These details led police to suspect that the perpetrator was searching for something.
Since there were no signs of forced entry, police speculated that the perpetrator was either an acquaintance or had sneaked into the store before the incident. More unusually, the first floor was also very messy, with shoes scattered and clothes torn from hangers. Police therefore deduced that the primary crime scene was likely on the first floor, and the victim was then dragged to the second floor.
However, the autopsy report contained a detail that puzzled investigators: Jiang Yunlu had male hickeys on her neck, and two different DNA samples were found under her fingernails. Yet, the overall scene suggested a solitary crime. So, whose DNA was the extra set? And what role did it play?
Because the surveillance cameras along the route were damaged, the police couldn't directly reconstruct the victim's movements before and after the incident, and could only start by investigating the victim's interpersonal relationships. Unexpectedly, a search of her computer revealed something shocking to the investigators. It turned out that Jiang Yunlu was strikingly attractive, and even though she was married, she maintained close relationships with many men in private. After reviewing the records, the police discovered that she had had ambiguous interactions with more than 80 men. This instantly complicated the case, as any emotional entanglement or financial dispute could become a motive.
The police quickly identified three key suspects: the victim's husband, Wang Xingyu (an online friend), and another man, Zhang Yuankai.
The husband was the first to arouse suspicion. His wife was pregnant, yet she was murdered in the store, but he appeared unusually calm, showing almost no grief. The police suspected that he might have harbored resentment because he knew about his wife's close interactions with multiple men. However, further investigation revealed that although his return home that night differed from his family's account, and surveillance footage showed he did arrive home later than his family claimed, the DNA found on the deceased did not match his, thus reducing suspicion against the husband.
The second suspect was Wang Xingyu, whose online name was "Qitian Dasheng" (Monkey King). Chat logs showed his conversations with Jiang Yunlu were quite explicit, and his words revealed possessiveness, repeatedly demanding she break off contact with other men, even containing threats. When police arrived at his home, they found two fresh scratches on his neck, resembling fingernail marks. This initially led police to highly suspect him as the murderer.
However, biometric analysis showed that Wang Xingyu's DNA did not match samples collected at the crime scene. He admitted to an ambiguous relationship with Jiang Yunlu and made threatening remarks online, but denied harming her and provided an alibi. While police found him suspicious, they could not directly link him to the murder.
Then, police turned their attention to Zhang Yuankai. On the day of the incident, Jiang Yunlu had spoken to him multiple times. Zhang Yuankai, also 27, worked in a factory, and his physique closely matched the police's composite sketch. More importantly, investigations revealed he was a gambling addict and owed Jiang Yunlu a substantial sum of money, which she had repeatedly lent him. The financial dispute, coupled with their ambiguous relationship, made Zhang Yuankai a crucial suspect.
When questioned by the police, Zhang Yuankai stated that Jiang Yunlu did call him that night to urge him to repay the money, but he was showering in the bathroom at the time and then went back to his dormitory to rest. This statement was initially partially corroborated by his colleagues, but after reviewing the timeline, the police found significant discrepancies. The bathroom manager said he went in around 7 PM and didn't come out until 9 PM; however, his colleagues stated they saw him showering around 8:30 PM. The accounts clearly didn't match.
Further investigation by the police revealed a significant discovery: behind the bathroom at the factory where Zhang Yuankai worked, there was a door that was usually closed but unlocked. Passing through this door led to a shortcut to Jiang Yunlu's shop, a round trip taking only about 40 minutes. In other words, Zhang Yuankai could very well have left during the two-hour supposed "shower" to go to the crime scene and then return.
Subsequently, police collected Zhang Yuankai's blood for comparison, and the results showed that his DNA matched the DNA from the hickeys on the victim's neck. Upon seeing the test results, Zhang Yuankai visibly panicked, but he still insisted that he had only gone to see Jiang Yunlu and had not killed her.
According to his confession, he received a debt collection call from Jiang Yunlu that night. Although he had no money to pay, he had a wicked thought and lied that he had just received his salary, wanting to use the opportunity to be intimate with her. He took a shortcut to the shop, didn't mention repaying the debt, but repeatedly made unwanted advances towards Jiang Yunlu, which she fiercely rejected and rebuked. He said the hickeys on the victim's neck were left from that forced intimacy, and after failing, he had to leave and then returned to the bathroom. Based on the timeline, this explanation does make sense.
However, while all the evidence proves he was at the scene, it cannot completely prove that he was the perpetrator. Because besides Zhang Yuankai's DNA, another set of unidentified male DNA was found on Jiang Yunlu's body. The police realized the real key was likely yet to come.
So, they returned to the clothing store for a thorough re-examination. This time, they finally found a crucial piece of evidence that had been previously overlooked on the balcony outside the window: a used protective item. The police quickly collected DNA from it, and the results perfectly matched another set of DNA found under Jiang Yunlu's fingernails. This meant that although Zhang Yuankai had been to the scene, he was likely not the one who killed Jiang Yunlu; the real killer was someone else.
The police then expanded the scope of their comparison and quickly identified a local youth, Zhang Hua. The comparison results showed that his DNA not only matched the evidence at the scene but also matched another set of biological evidence found on the victim. When the police arrived at his home, Zhang Hua offered almost no resistance and quickly confessed to the crime.
Zhang Hua confessed that after graduating from university, he worked away from home and returned with 3,000 yuan in cash, which was stolen while he was on a bus. He recalled that a strikingly beautiful woman walked past him on the bus, and then his money disappeared. Although he had no proof, he was convinced the woman had stolen it.
Afterwards, he wandered the streets and happened to pass Jiang Yunlu's clothing store. Seeing her inside, he felt she looked remarkably like the woman from the bus, and even went inside to talk to her. However, he didn't dare confront her directly and couldn't get his money back, his frustration and anger growing stronger. To make matters worse, he received a phone call from home demanding money, and his elders scolded him for not achieving much despite working for so long. These emotions combined to push him to the brink of losing control.
He returned to the clothing store and saw Jiang Yunlu tidying clothes. Suddenly, he rushed forward, pinned her down, and tried to strangle her. Jiang Yunlu struggled fiercely, preventing him from succeeding. Then, he closed the store door and used a rope to strangle her. During the attack, Jiang Yunlu struggled fiercely and scratched his ear, which explains why Zhang Hua's DNA was found under her fingernails.
Zhang Hua confessed that he was also frightened after the attack, smoked a cigarette, and then dragged the body to the second floor. Afterwards, he found opened protective packaging in the room, which fueled his even more malicious thoughts, leading him to commit further acts of assault. Afterwards, he casually threw the used items out the window onto the balcony, an action that later became crucial evidence in his conviction.
He then began searching the store for valuables, ultimately taking Jiang Yunlu's cell phone and gold necklace. He also intended to take the computer, but abandoned the idea due to its size and conspicuousness. As for the bag of 8,000 yuan in cash in the room, he completely ignored it, mistaking it for a corner trash bag. He also tried to move the body out to dispose of it, but lacked the strength, becoming exhausted by the time he reached the stairwell and hastily fled the scene.
The two points of doubt that initially led to the police's misjudgment were later clarified. The scratches on Wang Xingyu's neck were not left by the deceased, but rather from a physical altercation he sustained while on a date with another woman. He was ashamed and therefore gave evasive answers to the police. As for Jiang Yunlu's husband's contradictory statements, it was because he had secretly hired someone to collect evidence of his wife's infidelity, intending to prepare for potential future marital disputes, and therefore refused to tell the truth.
The truth of the entire case was now revealed. What initially seemed like a complex web of interpersonal entanglements, emotional disputes, and financial transactions led the police to multiple suspects. Ultimately, however, the person who truly took Jiang Yunlu's life was someone with whom she had almost no real connection, who committed the brutal act solely out of subjective suspicion and emotional outburst.
The most chilling aspect of this murder case is not just the killer's cruelty, but the absurd and almost chaotic starting point of his crime: simply because he suspected the woman before him resembled someone he had met on a bus, he unleashed all his anger, frustration, and shame upon her. Ultimately, Zhang Hua must also pay a heavy price for his actions.
