Organized labor is optimistic that the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers will be implemented by the end of July. The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, expressed this hope during a meeting with Onuh Edoka, Special Adviser on Labour Matters to the Kogi State Governor, and his team in Abuja.
Osifo highlighted the urgent need for the National Tripartite Negotiation Committee to finalize the new minimum wage bill so it can be approved by both the President and the National Assembly. He believes this change will help alleviate the economic difficulties faced by workers amid high inflation and rising living costs.
“Our aim is to have the new minimum wage approved by the President before the end of July to improve workers' conditions,” Osifo stated. He urged state governments to prepare for the new wage implementation, noting that some states, like Nasarawa, are already setting aside funds.
He specifically called on the Kogi State government to prioritize workers' welfare despite financial constraints. Onuh Edoka added that the current administration under Governor Ahmed Ododo has made significant improvements in addressing workers' welfare issues compared to the previous administration.
