Ondo State Unveils Mass Metering to Stop Estimated Bills

Welcome to My Article: Addressing the Electricity Challenges in Ondo State and Nigeria at Large

Hello, I am Amica, and I welcome you to my article. Today, we are discussing a critical issue that affects the daily lives of millions of people in Ondo State and Nigeria at large: electricity. The power sector in Nigeria has faced numerous challenges for decades, ranging from erratic supply and aging infrastructure to high tariffs and arbitrary billing. These issues have significantly impacted businesses, industries, and the quality of life for ordinary citizens. Amidst these challenges, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has taken a groundbreaking step by launching a mass metering programme aimed at tackling some of these persistent problems head-on.

Governor Aiyedatiwa Launches Mass Metering Programme for Ondo State Residents

  • An initiative to eliminate arbitrary, estimated electricity bills.
  • Residents now have faster, easier access to subsidized meters.
  • Ondo is the first state in Nigeria to operationalize the new power sector law.

In line with his promise to reform the power sector and ease the burden of the people of Ondo State in accessing electricity, Governor Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa officially inaugurated the "O’Datiwa Meters" on Tuesday, launching an electricity mass metering programme across the state.

Tackling Arbitrary Billing and Enhancing Transparency

Speaking at the launch event held at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted that the initiative is designed to end the era of arbitrary and inflated electricity bills, which have long plagued the residents of Ondo State and indeed, many other Nigerians.

Governor Aiyedatiwa underscored the importance of accurate metering, stating that it is not only a technical necessity but also a fundamental right of all consumers. "This programme marks a crucial step in our commitment to providing every citizen with a reliable and equitable electricity billing system," he said. By subsidizing the meters, the government aims to address energy theft and inefficient billing practices, ensuring that residents pay only for the energy they consume.

The Governor further stated, "This is a promise to the people that their hard-earned money will be spent justly, and they will receive the energy they pay for without hindrance." This initiative is expected to put an end to the uncertainties and discrepancies that have long affected the electricity billing process in the state.

A New Era in Electricity Regulation and Power Generation

Governor Aiyedatiwa also highlighted a significant regulatory shift in the state's electricity sector. The transfer of electricity oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (SERB) marks a pivotal moment. This transfer allows Ondo State to manage its electricity sector more effectively, tailoring policies to the specific needs of its people.

Looking ahead, the Governor announced plans for an ambitious venture into power generation, transmission, and distribution. He called on both distribution and generation companies to collaborate with the state in achieving its energy goals. "Our state is open to investors in all areas of power generation, transmission, and distribution. Together, we can ensure that every community in Ondo State is adequately powered," he emphasized. The O'Datiwa Meter Programme signifies the state's unwavering commitment to creating a future where energy is a source of empowerment and a pillar of equitable development.

Commendations and Collaborative Efforts

During his welcome address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Engr. Johnson Alabi, praised Governor Aiyedatiwa for his vision in transforming the energy sector in the state. He noted that the launch of the mass metering program represents a significant milestone in the state's history. Alabi emphasized that the initiative is primarily aimed at protecting consumers by eliminating the issue of overestimated electricity bills and enhancing transparency in the energy sector.

Alabi also thanked the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) for its partnership and support in making the project a reality. The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Rasaq Obe, echoed these sentiments, commending the Governor's consistent support from the outset and his dedication to improving the lives of the people of Ondo State.

Deolu Ijose, the Managing Director of BEDC, expressed his appreciation for the Governor's understanding of the critical role electricity plays in the state's development. He stated that the purpose of metering is to provide consumers with accurate energy usage data, which will address frustrations over inflated bills. Ijose assured that BEDC would work closely with the state government to guide the process and urged the residents of Ondo State to report any issues directly to the corporation instead of engaging in conflicts with the utility company.

Engr. Tunji Light-Ariyomo, Chairman of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Transition Committee, described the development as groundbreaking. He noted that Ondo has become the first state in Nigeria to operationalize the new power sector law, with Governor Aiyedatiwa being the first governor to make meters available to residents.

Impact on Residents and Businesses

The launch of the O'Datiwa Meter Program has been met with positive reactions from various stakeholders. Mr. Olukayode Babatunde, one of the beneficiaries, expressed his gratitude to the state government, stating that the initiative would enhance the standard of living and promote business growth in the state. By ensuring that residents pay only for the electricity they use, this program is expected to reduce the financial strain on households and small businesses, thereby stimulating economic activity and growth.
