Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has issued new directives in response to the ongoing local government administration crisis.
Following the House of Assembly's approval of nominees under factional Speaker Victor Jumbo on Tuesday, Governor Fubara addressed the newly appointed caretaker chairmen. He urged them to see themselves as guardians of their communities, focusing on the interests of their constituents rather than acting as superheroes.
Governor Fubara highlighted that these measures align with democratic principles and pointed out that resistance to tenure extension is a nationwide concern, not limited to Rivers State. He warned that allowing such extensions in one state could create a precedent for others.
He explained that appointing caretaker committees is a standard practice in many states and reassured that their tenure would be brief, with preparations for local government elections underway.
The governor emphasized a commitment to non-violent governance and directed the new officials to settle the financial obligations left by their predecessors, particularly salaries and entitlements.
