Samsung is preparing one of the most spectacular launch scenarios for a new mobile device. Among the upcoming innovations, the South Korean giant will present a tri-folding phone, which could be a new standard for foldables. Yonhap News reports that the company is looking to present the product in front of the APEC summit delegates in Gyeongju, South Korea, on October 31–November 1, 2025. This is if it were to be true that this is the most daring leap by Samsung since the Galaxy Z Fold series introduction.
Rumored Specs and Features
According to a leak, the new device, the Galaxy Z TriFold is a working title, would boast a gigantic 10-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display when completely unfolded. The TriFold is a sort of combination of a phone and a small tablet, with its display size being more than twice that of the current Galaxy Z Fold 6.
The source of energy for the device is supposed to be Qualcomm's following Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, which could be accompanied by 16GB of RAM and a choice of storage from 256GB to 1TB. The camera rumors point to a 200MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide with continuous focusing, and a 50MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. For taking selfies, Samsung may opt for two 10MP front cameras.
The software will probably be Android 16 with One UI 8.0, modified to support the use of the tri-folding display for multitasking and productivity.
Engineering Challenges
Even though the features sound eye-catching, the manufacturing of a tri-fold phone is a nightmare. The top durabilitiy mentioned in the discussions is the reason - two hinges necessitate more parts that are subjected to the wear and tear process and are the potential sources of failure. Thickness and weight are also problematic, as the three display panels can make the device bigger than the previous foldables. Another question that remains uncertain is battery life, as it is quite a challenge to power a 10-inch display with the required energy management.
Market Impact
Samsung has been at the forefront of the foldable market with its Galaxy Z Fold and Flip series, but the likes of Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo are nipping at its heels. The tri-fold phone may be the one to bring Samsung back in front of the pack with cutting-edge technology that attracts the power users who want a phone-tablet hybrid for work and entertainment. But the price will be the deciding factor - preliminary projections indicate a high-end cost that goes way beyond the existing foldables.
Outlook
It's one step ahead in tech on one side and a risk on the other. But if the firm manages such a magic trick, then we might be describing the new normal for the next generation mobile devices. But we have so much that can go against the TriFold in terms of durability, usability that common sense versus innovation can make or break the product here.
