Strike: Nigerian influencer, Reno Omokri reveals reason ASUU is adamant about getting its demands

Nigerian Social Media influencer and author, Mr. Reno Omokri has revealed reasons why the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is adamant about getting its demands before the strike action is suspended.

Recall, the educational union has been on strike for over six (6) months due to the inability of the government to fulfill its demands which includes payment of allowances and salaries, release of revitalization fund, adoption of Universities Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS), revamping of universities amongst others. Despite the strike action, some government stakeholders made it known that the Federal government could not borrow money to meet these demands as the country was broke whereas funds were invested in other projects that needed little attention. This lack of commitment on the side of the government however made ASUU extend it's strike action indefinitely according to decisions made in its last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

In a tweet recently shared by Omokri, he stated that the educational union is remaining firm in its decision because the country have enough money to meet these demands but political leaders were using it for their own personal interest.

He wrote: "How much is ASUU asking for? Less than $100 million to fund universities. Buhari has 10 Presidential jets worth over $200 million. Why not sell 8 and use the money for ASUU? The British Prime Minister does not have an official jet. Our country has no national airline to serve 210 million people but we have numerous jets to serve one president. No be juju be that? That is why ASUU is adamant. Money is not our problem, our issue is how we spend the little money we have".

What is your opinion about this?
