I’ve been using the Tecno Spark 20 Pro for exactly 30 days as my daily phone, and if you’re considering buying it in Lagos right now for around ₦180k-₦200k, here’s the honest breakdown without the sponsored hype.
*Design & Build: Surprisingly Premium*
For a budget phone, the Spark 20 Pro feels solid in hand. The glass back with that matte finish doesn’t attract fingerprints like my old phone did. At 8.4mm thick, it’s slim enough for one-hand use. The big 6.78” display is the first thing people notice — videos and Instagram look sharp at 120Hz.
But it’s not perfect. The plastic frame picks up small scratches after 2 weeks without a case. My advice: use the free case in the box for at least a month.
*Performance: Good for Daily Use, Not Gaming*
It runs on the MediaTek Helio G99 chip with 8GB RAM. For WhatsApp, TikTok, banking apps, and browsing? It’s smooth. I had zero lag switching between 6-7 apps.
Where it struggles is heavy gaming. COD Mobile runs at medium settings at 45-50fps. If you’re a hardcore gamer playing Genshin Impact daily, this isn’t the phone. But for 90% of Nigerians using social media + calls + YouTube, it’s more than enough.
*Camera: The 108MP Hype is Half True*
The 108MP main camera takes decent photos in daylight. Colors are vibrant and details are sharp if you have good lighting. Night mode is average — expect some noise if you’re in a dim restaurant.
The 32MP selfie camera is the real win here. Skin tones look natural without that over-beautified filter most Tecno phones use. For TikTok and WhatsApp status, it’s one of the best in this price range.
*Battery & Charging: 2-Day Battery Life*
The 5000mAh battery easily lasts 1.5 to 2 days with moderate use. With 33W fast charging, I go from 15% to 80% in about 40 minutes. That’s a lifesaver when NEPA takes light and you need a quick charge before heading out.
*Software: HiOS Has Ads, But Manageable*
Tecno’s HiOS 14 is based on Android 13. It has some pre-installed apps and ads in the weather app. You can turn most of them off in settings within 5 minutes. The upside is useful features like Game Mode and Phone Manager that actually help.
*What I Don’t Like*
1. No 5G — but honestly, 4G is still faster than most Nigerian networks anyway
2. The vibration motor feels cheap compared to Samsung
3. No water resistance rating, so keep it away from rain
*Should You Buy It?*
*Buy it if*: You want a big screen, good battery, and solid selfie camera under ₦200k. It’s perfect for students, small business owners, and first-time smartphone users.
*Skip it if*: You’re a heavy gamer or need a phone with proper water resistance.
*My Verdict: 7.5/10*
For ₦180k, the Spark 20 Pro gives you 80% of what a ₦350k phone offers. It’s not flagship level, but it’s the best value Tecno has made in the last 2 years.
_I bought this phone myself at Computer Village Ikeja. No brand sent it to me. If you have questions about specific features, drop them below and I’ll answer._
