Tensions Flare in Anambra’s Nri Community as Youths Apprehend APC Poster Vandals
Tensions erupted in the Nri community, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State after local youths apprehended individuals suspected of vandalizing campaign materials belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC), including posters of the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Senator Uche Ekwunife.
The incident, which occurred sparked outrage among community members and APC supporters, who accused the suspects of being loyal to a rival political party. Eyewitnesses reported that the vandals were caught defacing and removing APC campaign posters and billboards in strategic locations across the community. The swift intervention of vigilant youths led to the apprehension of the suspects, who were handed over to local authorities.
A community leader, Chief Emeka Okoye, condemned the act, stating, “This kind of behavior undermines the democratic process and creates unnecessary tension in our peaceful community. We will not tolerate actions that threaten our unity or the integrity of the upcoming elections.”
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident and stated that the suspects are currently in custody for questioning. DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement, “We received a report of vandalism of political campaign materials in Nri, and our officers promptly responded. The suspects have been detained, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the motive behind their actions and identify any sponsors.”
The APC state chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike, expressed dismay over the vandalism, calling it a deliberate attempt to intimidate and suppress the party’s campaign efforts ahead of the governorship election. “We urge the police to thoroughly investigate this matter and ensure that justice is served. The APC remains committed to a peaceful and fair electoral process,” he stated.
