On the busy Yangtze River Bridge in Nanjing, where countless lives have ended in silence, one man has quietly stood guard for more than twenty years. His name is Chen Si, but many know him simply as the “Angel of Nanjing.”
Every weekend, without fail, Chen puts on his red volunteer jacket printed with the words “Cherish life every day” and heads to the bridge. He doesn’t just walk across once or twice—he crosses it again and again, sometimes ten times in a single day. His eyes are always searching, not for danger in the usual sense, but for despair: a slumped shoulder, a tear-streaked face, someone staring too long at the river below.
When he spots someone in pain, Chen doesn’t hesitate. He walks up gently, speaks softly, and listens—really listens. Many times, those conversations have ended with Chen pulling someone back from the ledge, both physically and emotionally. Since 2003, he has saved nearly 500 people from ending their lives.
But Chen’s work doesn’t stop once they leave the bridge. Using his own modest savings, he helps survivors with food, shelter, even school fees or job connections—anything that might give them a reason to start over. For Chen, saving a life isn’t just about stopping a leap; it’s about helping someone find hope again.
The Yangtze River Bridge has a tragic reputation as one of the world’s deadliest suicide sites. Yet, amid the despair, Chen Si has become a living reminder that compassion can change everything. To the strangers he saves, he is not just a rescuer—he is proof that someone still cares.
HE TEACHES US THAT:
🔸 You do not need a cape to be a ddssdddhero.
🔸 All you need is to care deeply and always.
We honour the ‘Angel of Nanjing’.
He is a true hero, We shall all learn from him by doing something good to the people around us and our community. Albert Einstein said "Try not to be a man of success but rather try to be a man of Value".
