The Art of Setting Goals

First, Ryan Giggs curled his penalty into a corner; thereby sending Petr Cech sprawling and rolling into the opposite direction.

Next, Van Der Sar saved Nicholas Anelka’s sudden death penalty. That was it. Manchester United attained their vision of winning the European champions league in 2008.

It may seem simple to you dear reader. Nevertheless, it was not easy.

They did not do things at random as a team. Whatever step they took was meticulously directed at winning the Champions League that year. That was their ultimate desire. That passion defined their success.

Therefore ,indeed they attained it by beating Chelsea in the post- match penalty shoot -out.In that endeavor, they needed step by step  achievements , or attained goals before realizing their vision.

Won games were the achieved goals. Beating Barcelona  was one of their greatest realized goals towards their dream.

As individuals, there are achievements we desire in our lives. Some people desire to be wealthy by the age of thirty. Others at  forty or fifty. All these are individual visions. A vision keeps you  going for years  in your life.

Meanwhile, there are certain cumulative achievements one sets himself  as steps towards attaining the vision. For example, Manchester United’s goals were to win games so that they could reach the dream final in 2008 and lift the prestigious Champions League trophy. Some of their goals were to buy great players that could help them attain their vision of conquring Europe.

Similarly, as an individual, certainly you have a vision. Probably you would like to be promoted. Or you want to have your own business by  2032.That is your vision. To attain the vision of owning your own business by 2032 means  you have to put up a plan. Set what activities to accomplish to be a business owner in the next ten years.One of your goals may be to save 20% of your salary so that you have money to invest in your business.

Those goals are supposed to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound (SMART) as said by George Doran in the November 1981 issue of ‘Management Review’ publication.

Each goal you successfully accomplish is a motivational factor in your quest to achieve your dream.

Your goals  are the rungs of that personal ladder that you climb up to your defined success or vision.

Dear reader, define your success today. Your definition of  success  is your vision. Within your vision, you need to formulate SMART goals. Then you are enrooted to success in whatever aspect of life.
