The Legend of Goa Kendil: The Tale of the Lost Princess

A Timeless Legend from Pacitan, East Java

Long ago, in a small village in Pacitan, East Java, there lived a beautiful princess named Roro Jonggrang. She was the daughter of a wealthy and powerful regent. Though admired for her beauty, Roro Jonggrang was known for her arrogance and indifference toward the lives of her people.

One day, a young man named Bandung Bondowoso came to the village and fell deeply in love with the princess. However, Roro Jonggrang rejected him, believing that he was not worthy of her. Determined to prove his devotion, Bandung Bondowoso vowed to build a thousand temples in a single night.

With the help of supernatural forces, he nearly succeeded in completing the impossible task. Realizing that she might have to keep her promise, Roro Jonggrang devised a trick. She ordered the villagers to light fires and pound rice, creating the illusion that dawn had already arrived.

Deceived into believing that morning had come, Bandung Bondowoso abandoned the task with only one temple left unfinished. Furious at Roro Jonggrang’s betrayal, he cursed her, turning her into stone—the final statue of the 999th temple.

Legend has it that in Goa Kendil, there still stands a mysterious statue believed to be Roro Jonggrang, eternally frozen as a reminder of her pride and deceit.
