Chapter Three: The Confrontation
The riverside air grew heavy as Ngozi’s husband, Emeka, stormed toward them, his face twisted with rage. Amara clutched Obinna’s hand, her heart pounding, while Chinedu stepped forward, a shield between them and the approaching threat. Leave them be, Emeka, Chinedu warned, his voice firm. Emeka, a burly man with a scar across his cheek, sneered. This boy belongs to my house! You stole him, Amara! Obinna trembled but stood tall. I’m not yours, he said, his voice cracking. I came to find my real family. Amara’s eyes welled with pride, though fear gripped her. She hadn’t expected this confrontation so soon. Emeka lunged, but Chinedu blocked him, shoving him back. This ends now, Chinedu growled. Obinna chooses where he belongs. Villagers gathered, drawn by the commotion, their murmurs filling the air. Emeka, outnumbered and outmatched, spat on the ground. You’ll regret this, he snarled, retreating toward the trees. Amara turned to Obinna, cupping his face. I’m here now, she whispered. He nodded, tears mixing with the dust on his cheeks. Chinedu suggested they return home, but Obinna hesitated. What if he comes back? He asked. Amara promised protection, her resolve strengthening. As they walked back, the village buzzed with whispers. Amara knew the secret was out, and with it came both relief and danger. Emeka’s threat lingered like a storm cloud. That night, under the flickering lantern light, they planned their next steps—rebuilding trust and facing whatever came. The river’s flow seemed to echo their uncertain future, a family forged in secrets now tested by courage.
