THE WELFARE OF GHANAIAN BASIC TEACHER

*A COMPUTER PER TEACHER*

There is a negotiation between the government and the teacher unions that there will be distribution of laptops to every teacher which entails the content of the new curriculum.

The total price of the laptop is estimates Gh1500 and there is subsidy of 70% by the government so each teacher is to pay around 450gh in addition to it.

Thus good idea and I appreciate the government for that.

But come to think of it, in the Gnat Constitution, article I think 343 states clearly that the welfare of every teacher is their responsibility and this also form part on the teachers welfare so why should teachers then pay for their materials for the government work?

Again, every teacher within any teacher union pay dues as a member so if you teacher unions cannot incurred expense for the teacher based on the work he or she is paying dues for then what is the necessity for joining the union?

Now on the government and Educational management:

Why should a teacher be coerced to buy his/her own working tools and equipments?

From the director general, GES headquarters to the district director, who paid part of the cost of the computers at their various offices?

When government was digitizing parliament, which MP paid 30% of the cost of the iPad installed and the refreshments?

When the doctor doesn't have consumables, tools and equipments to work with does he/she purchase it by him/herself?

Government has been able to freely supply ALL SHS students and Schools with:

a. 3 square meals per day

b. 5 different school uniforms

c. Wi-Fi

d. Utilities

e. Text books,

f. Exercise books, etc

but can't supply teachers with FREE computers to aid teaching and learning?

Our teacher unions (GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT GH, etc) have totally failed in this instance and should bow their heads in shame.

We pay for the following expenditures to the benefit of government without corresponding allowances/ reliefs:

1. Rent

2. Transportation

3. Fuel

4. Uniforms/ atires

5. Medicals

6. Personal taxes, etc

Why should teacher unions negotiate on government own policy of digitizing education? If Government can't provide tools and equipments to roll out her own policy who cares? After all, teachers have been purchasing their own suplimentary text books , computers/ Laptops, copies of syllabuses, teaching aids, etc for their work.

Is it a curse to be a teacher in Ghana?
