Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, was given instructions by President Bola Tinubu on Monday to look into any financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Before her suspension by the President on Monday, Dr. Betta Edu served as the minister leading the ministry.
In addition to suspending her, Tinubu gave the anti-graft agency instructions to look into the dealings of ministries.
Ajuri Ngelale, the President's Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, made a statement that included this information.
A leaked memo on December 20, 2023, in which Edu was accused of directing the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, to transfer N585 million to a private account belonging to a person named Oniyelu Bridget—whom the ministry claimed to be the Project Accountant, Grants for Vulnerable Groups—caused a backlash.
Nonetheless, Tinubu stated in the Monday statement that he was dedicated to "maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the management of the Nigerian Commonwealth."
According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu has suspended Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, from her position effective immediately. This action is in keeping with her declared commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the management of the commonwealth of Nigerians.
