Trump's Lawyers Hold Meeting with Justice Department in Light of Complaints Regarding Special Counsel Investigation

Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that lawyers representing former President Donald Trump are set to meet with Justice Department officials on Monday. The purpose of the meeting is to address concerns raised by Trump's legal team regarding what they perceive as prosecutorial misconduct. The timing of this meeting is significant, as it coincides with the near conclusion of the special counsel's investigation into Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents and potential obstruction of justice.

Despite publicly requesting a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland, it is not expected that he will be in attendance. Meanwhile, a source has disclosed that a grand jury will be hearing testimony from an additional witness related to the classified documents inquiry at the federal courthouse in Washington, DC, later this week. This development marks the first notable activity from the grand jury assigned to the classified documents case in the past month.

In their letter to Garland, which was posted on Trump's social media platform last month, Trump's attorneys John Rowley and James Trusty expressed their belief that no previous President in U.S. history has been subjected to such an unjustified and unlawful investigation. The Department of Justice's probe into the handling of documents and potential obstruction by the former president is being overseen by special counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by Garland and operates independently.

Typically, defense attorneys engage in discussions with prosecutors when charging decisions are imminent. However, sources indicate that Smith has not informed Trump's legal team about any impending decisions. It remains uncertain whether Smith has interviewed Mark Meadows, Trump's former chief of staff, who could potentially serve as a crucial witness. Furthermore, the timing of Smith's release of his final report to Garland or any decisions on charges remains unknown.
