Jane Ruth, a 28-year-old mother of one is reaping big from a sewing business at Nsibambi boys hostel located along ssubi road within Uganda Christian university .
She says that she completed her senior four and her parents told her that they didn’t have money to push her for further studies and she decided to ask a friend to teach her how to operate a sewing machine.
She studied to learn how to operate a sewing machine and this took her over one year and she had already gained the skills.
Ruth then realized that the world was not going to be easy for her since she had no money to acquire her own sewing machine and start earning money.
“My friend’ family was well off so they decided to purchase for me a sewing machine”, she said.
Jane started to operate her business from her friends’ work station located in Aura for over 3 years.

A close relative informed jane that there was need to establish a sewing machine at the Nsibambi boys’ hostel since the boys were suffering a lot to take their clothes outside campus for sewing.
Little did she know that even the girls at sabiti hall had the same need of a tailor.
Jane got the little money she had made and travelled from arua to mukono then to Uganda Christian university where she had already been connected by her close relative.
Starting up serious business
The turn up of students who needed to have their clothes worked on was so high from day one as jane explains.
She says that each student who used to bring clothes for sewing would inform others afterwards.
This made her to be known and later even the girls especially from sabiiti hall started bringing their clothes to her.
Earning from the business
Ruth’ earnings are usually 20000-30000 ug shs per day depending on the day but the list she normally takes home is 20000ugsh just from sewing alone.
Ruth says that she can’t leave her business because it pays off more than many white collar jobs.
She has also managed to start doing laundry for students where she earns at least 20000ughs per day especially on weekends.
