Yoruba people live mostly in South-West Nigeria. They have developed a variety of different artistic forms including pottery, weaving, beadwork, metalwork, and mask making.
Most of the artworks were made to honour the gods and ancestors and since there are more than 401 known gods to the Yoruba there is much sculpture and artwork made.
The 401 known gods of those time includes;
- Ogun (gods of iron)
- Agemo
- Sango (gods of fire/thunder)
- Osun (gods of the river)
- Obatala (gods of purity)
- Ifa (Oracle)
- Orisa Ibeji (gods of Twins)
- osanyin (this is synonimors to Ifa/Oracle)
- Eesu (known as gods of the dark)
- Aje (gods of wealth)
just to mention few among many of them. the believe system of the yoruba's of those age is that there are thousands of solution in relation to each of this gods.
