10 Tips to becoming successful in life

What does SUCCESS mean to YOU?

How do you define your success? Before you can define what your success means to you, you need to first note down what your success will look like and in which areas of your life you want to achieve this success. Do you want to start your own business? What do you need to change and do now to be able to start your own business? By when do you want to start your own business? You need to write down your long-term and short-term goals and work towards it by keeping track of which goals you have achieved and which goals you will need a little more time to work on.

10 Tips to be successful

1.)    Commitment

Commitment is a very strong word that not many people are willing to work on. Your level of commitment will define the level of success you attain. When writing down your goals, write down when you want to achieve that goal and what you would do, risk, or sacrifice to achieve it. Find ways to keep yourself motivated through your commitment.

Do not make unrealistic goals. Your goals should be attainable and realistic enough. If your goals are not working out the way you planned, simply look at new ways to adjust it, but never change your goals. As the saying goes, “Adjust the plan, don’t change the goal” – Unknown.

2.)    Enjoy the journey

Take note of achievements and failures along the way and give yourself a pat on the back for getting this far. Learn from your mistakes and improve on them. Most important of all, have fun on this journey and celebrate every little achievement along the way. In the end, it’s not about reaching the goal, it’s about the journey you traveled to reach that goal.

3.)    Maintain a positive mindset

When you start developing a positive mindset, you will start trusting yourself more and in turn, you will keep yourself motivated along the way. Negative thoughts may creep in at times, but it is important to replace those negative thoughts with positive thoughts and to keep pushing forward. At times you will be surrounded by people who try to break your self-confidence by insulting you or making you believe that you will fail. Keep believing in yourself and remove all negative people from your life.

4.)    Always be coachable

You are never too old to learn a new skill so always be open to learning from others and be coachable. Always be open to broadening your knowledge in the areas where you want to achieve your success. Hang around successful people and you will become one of them. If you want to be successful, the best place to learn how is from successful people.

5.)    Be honest with yourself

If you see that you are struggling to achieve your goals, be honest with yourself about it instead of knowing that it won’t work a certain way but still believing everything is still on track. If you are feeling too overwhelmed, don’t push yourself too hard. Take a break, re-energize, and come back stronger than before. Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone.

6.)    Changing your perspective

Sometimes along the way we lose sight of what we need to do to stay on track in achieving our goals and changing your perspective can help you see things in a different light and can help you see solutions that you haven’t seen before. So, when things get tough, take a step back, breathe, and look at the goal from a different angle. When you hear yourself talking negatively, change that negative talk into positive talk and you will see how things start shifting and how it all starts working out for you again.

7.)    Believe in yourself

You must be able to count on yourself especially when the going gets tough. You cannot expect others to do certain things for you that only you can do to achieve your goal, e.g. You cannot expect a friend to write a test for you, or you cannot expect your partner to take a driving lesson for you. You must trust yourself enough to believe that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. It is important to find an accountability partner who can help you to stay on track with your goals and to remind you of important tasks you need to complete or to congratulate you on achieving small successes to keep you motivated. It is equally important to hold yourself accountable to achieve your goals.

8.)    Never stop planning

Always plan your goals and write them down so that you can see them every day and tick them off as you reach that goal. Even if you don’t reach your goal in that stipulated timeframe, you will be able to see how far you have come to reaching that goal and it would be motivating enough to keep you moving forward and not give up. Keeping track of your journey and success is a wonderful motivator and will also help you improve in certain areas of your life.

9.)    Remove all distractions

Get rid of anything that might distract you on your journey to your success and focus only on achieving your goals. At times people might be the distraction and cause you unnecessary stress.  Try to move away from such people. Do not allow others’ negativity to rub off on you.  Think about all the things that might distract you and stay away from those things when it comes to the time when you need to focus on your goal. Changing your habits early on will help you in the long run.

10.) Do not burn yourself out

Avoid burning yourself out in the process of working towards your goals. Take your much-needed rest when it is due. Go on a weekend getaway to refresh your body and mind. Have fun on your journey and do not get too obsessed with your goals. Enjoy it instead of feeling that it is a MUST to do it. Do not overwork yourself and do not sit and think about it all day long. This will cause you to not achieve anything at all. Enjoy the finer things in life too.  Continue to learn new ways you can achieve your success and make new friends along the way!
