Watermelon is a fruit that is very rich in vitamins A and C and substances that inhibit oxidation. Aside from eating it to quench our thirst, it has some nutritional benefits that might prevent some sicknesses.
The fruit is sweet and contains a large amount of water, but some people don't like it because of its seeds. According to a study done by Healthline, the following sicknesses might be prevented by eating watermelon:
1. Watermelon is said to help your heart become healthier and reduce your risk of having a stroke or hypertension because it lowers the level of cholesterol in your body.
2. Aside from helping you remain hydrated, it regulates the temperature of your body and prevents high blood pressure. It contains an amino acid called citrulline, which helps by expanding your blood vessels and reducing high blood pressure.
3. Some ingredients known as cucurbitacin E and lycopene are present in watermelon and might act as anticancer agents and may lower the risk of prostate cancer.
A study believes that lycopene works by reducing the risk of cell division, which is one of the causes of cancer. Cucurbitacin E is said to prevent tumors from growing and help your body get rid of damaged cells.
4. It contains an amino acid known as citrulline, which can help in reducing the body's pain that is felt after exercise. A study shows that regular consumption of watermelon can help your body perform well during exercise.
5. It supplies your body with the nutrients it needs to fight against particles that may corrode the cells in your blood.
If these particles accumulate in your body, it might cause corrosion that can result in cardiovascular diseases or diabetes. Eating watermelon helps prevent all these things from happening.
6. The lycopene in watermelon might prevent eye disease caused by degeneration of the cells in a small yellowish central area of the retina that causes some elderly people to have blurred vision or blindness.
