A Ghost Named Precious: My Encounter on a Rainy Nairobi Morning

I don't ’t dwell too much on the supernatural, but I do believe that I saw a ghost once. I was a young college student interning for a small media company at Ufungamano house. Like any self-respecting young Kamba man, I used to live in the leafy suburbs of Pipeline. This one day it had been raining all night and was still drizzling in the morning. Naturally, I was in a hurry so I decided to drop a few gangster points and carry my umbrella. It was still drizzling, albeit lightly, when I got to town. I took out my umbrella and started the long trek across town.

Most people had taken shelter from the drizzle except for those of us who had been wise enough to bring umbrellas. Ahead of me, however, I noticed a young petite woman who had chosen to brave the drizzle  without an umbrella, which was strange because she had the type of hair women get hit by cars running to protect from the rain. Instinctively, I caught up with her and covered her under my umbrella. We talked a bit and I learned that she was, coincidentally, from Pipeline. She didn't have a phone but she invited me to visit her at Kware area and ask for Precious,  apparently she was quite well-known. We parted ways somewhere along Muindi Mbingu street with the promise of a visit.

When I left work at three, I decided to take a stroll towards Kware in Pipeline. I didn't expect to see her because si you know women lie,  but it was worth the try. When I got there at around six I chanced upon a disco matanga. As I passed by, a little girl came up to me and handed me a pamphlet of the short eulogy. And right there, looking right at me with the brightest smile I ever saw, was Precious! She had been killed three days prior in a domestic quarrel with her boyfriend. And no, she did not have a twin.

I get goosebumps to this day.
