AI Threatens Kenya's Academic Writing Industry: Freelancers Report Drop in Earnings

Academic writing industry is experiencing a drop in work opportunities and earnings due to the growing use of AI by students.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot that surpassed 100 million users four months after its launch, has been incorporated into

Microsoft's Bing search engine, as well as other platforms, allowing students to write quality essays with a human touch that passes plagiarism tests. More than 89% of American students polled admitted to using ChatGPT for homework assistance, with 53% using it for essay writing. This has led to a significant decrease in the number of tasks for which freelancers can bid or qualify. However, some clients still prefer to use human freelancers and only use machine help for proofreading.

The academic writing industry in Kenya has been a significant source of work for freelancers from developed countries, and the use of AI has disrupted the INDUSTRY.
