Won Tonne Soup was invented in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and has since been a staple in Chinese cuisine. The term "won tonne" literally translates to "swallowing clouds" in Chinese, referring to the delicate texture of the dumplings.

Recipe for Won Ton Soup:




a.       1 pound ground pork

b.       1/2-pound shrimp, peeled and deveined

c.       1 tablespoon sesame oil

d.       1 tablespoon soy sauce

e.       1 tablespoon cornstarch

f.        2 teaspoons ginger, minced

g.       2 teaspoons garlic, minced

h.       1 egg

i.         1/4 teaspoon white pepper

j.         1/4 teaspoon salt

k.       24 won ton wrappers

l.         6 cups chicken or vegetable stock

m.     2 green onions, thinly sliced




i.                     In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, shrimp, sesame oil, soy sauce, cornstarch, ginger, garlic, egg, white pepper, and salt. Mix well to combine.

ii.                   Take a won-ton wrapper and place a teaspoon of the filling in the center. Wet the edges of the wrapper with water and fold in half to form a triangle. Press the edges together to seal the dumpling. Repeat with the remaining won ton wrappers and filling.

iii.                 In a large pot, bring the chicken or vegetable stock to a boil. Add the won tons to the pot and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through.

iv.                 Serve the won tons in bowls with broth and sliced green onions.
