Becoming more resilient

Resilience is a gradual process of  building our emotional resources to recover from painful or traumatic experiences. I always compare resilience to enduring like a tree breaking its branches during a strong wind.

In the context of Covid19, most people lost their loved ones and means of survival and had to contend with new life scenarios that emerged, such as lock downs, curfews and so on. Unfortunately,  some succumbed to depression affecting their lives parmanently.

On a spiritual sense, resilience involves: Going through suffering and building courage in the Lord. Jesus Christ urges us to recognise that God is in control and our ultimate source of strength (John 16:33).

If we become strongly bonded to Him, He will give us sufficient resources to overcome challenges that come unexpectedly to disrupt the normal functioning of our lives and families. Since the outbreak of Covid19, our lives have never been the same again.

I want to emphasise on the fundamental importance of functional relationships between children, parents and God that were disrupted after the Covid19 pandemic. Foremost, as parents you should do everything to ensure that your children know that you love them, you care for them and their happiness is your greatest concern ( Adventist Home, page 193, paragraph 3-4). Knowing this develops a sense of confidence that guards against temptation. Our hopeful future becomes a clear focus when we meditate upon the words of scripture - where the Lord declares that He will give us a ".. a future and a hope" Jeremiah 29:11.

Moreover, studies have shown that children are able to regulate their emotional responses and counter turmoil because of their bonding experiences. We shouldn't pretend to be okay or ignore challenges but claim God's promises to help us get through (Philippians 4:13; 1 Corinthians 12:9).

Here are few things we can do to become more resilient:

1. Think positively - Allow the processing of your emotions and look for the good out of hardship

2. Express your emotions in a healthy and proactive way

3. Remain hopeful that God will take you through the storms of life.
