British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigns

Many of the resigning ministers cited the loss of confidence in Boris Johnson as prime minister as the reason for their resignation

The embattled British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned as leader of the Conservative Party and effectively as Prime Minister.

Mr Johnson announced his resignation on Thursday afternoon at 10 Downing Street, London.

However, he said he would remain in office until the Conservative Party elected a new leader, who would also take over as prime minister. That should happen before October.

In his speech on Thursday, Mr Johnson thanked the Conservative Party and British voters for trusting the party and helping it win the 2019 election.

His party members were reportedly calling for Mr Johnson's resignation, with some 50 leaders of the party resigning from government posts.

"I want you to know how sad I am to be leaving the best job in the world," Johnson said Thursday.

He added that nobody is indispensable in politics. From now until the new Prime Minister takes office, the interests of the British people will continue to be served, he said.

Mr Johnson vowed to support the new leader who is emerging. The schedule for electing a new leader will be released next week.

Mr Johnson has faced severe public scrutiny over the Partygate scandal and more recently over Christopher Pincher, whom he appointed Chief Whip despite being aware of his wrongdoing.

Other issues that sparked Mr Johnson's woes are the current economic plight of Britons.

Many of the resigning ministers cited a loss of confidence in the prime minister as the reason for their resignation.
