Confessions of a Broke Nigerian Student

Being broke as a Nigerian student isn’t just a condition. It’s a lifestyle. A full-blown survival mission.

Let me open the book of lamentation—chapter garri, verse dry pocket.

---

1. I Became a Professional Hotspot Beggar

My data expired mid-assignment. I had two options:

Cry.

Look for someone with MTN and a good heart.

I ended up dropping sweet lines like, “Abeg just 200MB, I swear I’ll repay it in this life.”

I even formed bestie with one girl because she always had Airtel. I was loyal… until she traveled.

2. Garri Became My Breakfast, Lunch & Life

I’ve tried it all—garri with sugar, without sugar, with groundnut, with imagination.

One time I poured cold water, and it tasted like depression. I still drank it because… priorities.

3. Skipping Events = Survival

People be shouting, “Let’s go out!”

Me, checking my account: ₦87.32

I became the king of excuses:

“Ah I have headache.”

“My uncle’s lizard is sick.”

“NEPA took my motivation.”

---

4. Borrowing and Forgetting to Pay

Not because I wanted to. But when you borrow ₦500, and your bank sends you “₦0.11 balance,” how do you even start repaying?

If I owe you and you're reading this… be patient. Help is coming. Amen.

5. My Room Looked Like a Minimalist Museum

No curtain. One spoon. One plate. No chair.

If you visited me, you had to sit on the floor or stand with confidence.

Some girls came once and asked, “Is this a room or a prayer closet?” I said, “It’s humble living.”

Moral of the Story:

Being a broke student teaches you two things:

1. Creativity

2. How to survive with ₦200 for 4 days

If you’ve ever priced toothpaste and walked away, just know—we are in this together.
