Experts differ as NSA partners UK anti-crime agency to battle kidnappers

Security experts have presented contrasting opinions on the National Security Adviser's plan to collaborate with the UK's National Crime Agency against kidnappers. Recently, the NSA has overseen successful operations, such as the rescue of 22 individuals kidnapped from Zamfara State and the safe return of a Kaduna judge's children. These efforts, coordinated by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), highlight ongoing initiatives to combat kidnapping.

Despite these successes, some experts criticize the NSA's approach, arguing it duplicates existing agencies' functions and undermines coordinated efforts among security bodies like the military, navy, and intelligence services. Retired Commodore Adekunle Olawunmi emphasized existing mechanisms like the Joint Intelligence Board, suggesting that the NSA's proposal might signify a lack of understanding or political maneuvering.

Dr. Kabir Adamu, managing director of Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, expressed concern that the NSA's operational role contradicts its advisory mandate under the National Security Act (2006). He cautioned against the NSA's Anti-Kidnapping Fusion Centre becoming operational, fearing political misuse and suggesting that it could compromise existing security protocols.

In contrast, other experts like Chigozie Ubani supported the NSA's initiative, viewing it as vital for enhancing national security against evolving threats like terrorism and kidnapping. Ubani emphasized the necessity of technological advancements and international collaboration to tackle such crimes effectively.

Overall, while opinions vary on the NSA's strategy, the debate underscores the complex landscape of Nigeria's security challenges and the diverse perspectives on how best to address them.
