Former Rivers LG bosses defy police order, stage protests

Former chairmen of 21 out of the 23 local government areas in Rivers State held protests on Monday in their respective council areas. Despite warnings from the state Police Command against such actions, these ex-council bosses, who support Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, demonstrated in their local councils.

In Buguma, the headquarters of the Asari-Toru LGA, former Chairman Onengiyeofori George and his supporters paraded through town, expressing solidarity with Wike through songs and placards. The placards called for the police to maintain their presence at the council headquarters, with messages such as "Sim Fubara Can’t Continue to Act As He Likes" and "There’s No Vacancy in Asari-Toru Council."

According to Channels Television, in Asari-Toru LGA, the protest nearly turned violent when alleged members of Asari Dokubo’s private military group, known as Amama soldiers, tried to attack the protesters. Police intervened swiftly to prevent escalation, and the demonstrators later delivered a protest letter to the police.

Similarly, in Abonnema, the headquarters of Akuku-Toru LGA, some individuals staged a protest in support of the ongoing closure of council premises by the police.
