In Kenya today, more than a million people find it hard to sustain food in their homes because they can barely afford it.
Food is a basic need and humans need it to survive and do day-to-day activities. Some of them are small-scale farmers who depend on agriculture to sustain their feeds and cost of living. They have been cases of food insecurity countrywide which is often rooted in poverty and has a long-term effect on normal citizens, family members, communities, and the country’s development and prosperity.
This limits the country’s economic growth thus Kenyans are feeling the pinch of high food prices more than ever. Some of those who oversee the progress of the Kenyan agricultural sector propose that more people should embrace agriculture which will not only increase the production of food but also revive the countries’ economy. This may shorten the over-dependency of food from the government to the people. When people depend on the government for food it will budget billions of money to cater for their needs and less money will be allocated to the country’s development which has been the nation's objective. Also, the government should support farmers by subsiding agricultural inputs.
They should allow farmers to have subsidized fertilizer and extend subsidies to seeds. They should also reduce the cost of agriculture tools and machines which may increase food production at a high rate. They have been complained by farmers that the cost of the fertilizer is too expensive for them limiting them to prosper in their agricultural course. If the government reduces the cost of fertilizers and agriculture inputs it may revive the agriculture sector which has been in the low. A revitalized agriculture sector will play a vital role in developing the country’s economy. An increase in agriculture may be the only way out of hunger.
If agriculture grows the excess agriculture goods will be used as export and the country benefit by receiving a large amount of money which can be used to improve and strengthen the agriculture sector. Prolonged undernourishment stunts growth, slows cognitive development, and increases susceptibility to illness.
