Attack on Kuje Prison: The US warns people that Abuja's criminality is likely to increase.
The American Embassy in Nigeria has advised its nationals not to go on the airport route in Abuja or in any other state of Nigeria.
The warning was issued after suspected Boko Haram militants on Tuesday night raided Kuje Prison and released several prisoners.
Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, and the riverine regions of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are some of the states in this group.
Only necessary travel to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Niger, Sokoto, Kogi, and regions of Kebbi State and Abia that are within 20 kilometers of the Niger border, non-riverine portions of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, and Taraba States, has been recommended to citizens.
In a statement sent by the US embassy on Wednesday, headlined "Abuja FCT jail breach near the airport on July 5, 2022," the embassy said that criminality had spread over the whole nation of Nigeria.
"On the evening of July 5, 2022, an assault on Kuje Prison rescued a significant number of the estimated 1,000 prisoners," the statement said. The distance between the jail and the Central Business District is around 27 kilometers.
"Crime is likely to become worse in and around Abuja. For the next two weeks, it is advised that US residents maintain a high level of personal security awareness and refrain from needless travel near airports.
Crime is pervasive in Nigeria and tends to increase at night. The greatest defense is avoiding places and circumstances where victimization is most likely to occur. Limit your nocturnal activities and avoid displaying valuables. "
To more effectively target crowds, terrorists are turning to less technologically advanced assault techniques like knives, weapons, and automobiles.
According to the statement, "terrorists often target unprotected or weak targets, such as high-profile public events, political rallies, holiday festivities, protests, hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by visitors, etc."
