For this car, German engineers had to choose the brand by choice - Mercedes GLC was the most popular model for two years. Will the new version of the "car for everything" bear the success of its predecessor and keep the scepter? I checked if it was true by covering Spanish roads and wilderness in the GLC.
Imagine the car you pick up the kids from school and maneuver gracefully in the cramped parking lot next to the supermarket, and in your free time you rush to the edge of the continent and get out of the car refreshed. Not only that - at your destination you leave the asphalt, discovering the charms of local nature in silence. Such a car already exists and it is the newest Mercedes GLC. I also found it hard to believe in such multitasking.
The new Mercedes GLC - universal to the square
The old (and a bit hackneyed today) adage is that if there is something for everything, it is for ... nothing. It was with this mindset that I got behind the wheel of "another boring SUV" at the Barcelona airport. And with a star on the hood? Okay, then "another expensive and comfortable SUV". For some reason, however, this model has been used by as many as 2.6 million customers since 2008 (previously it was in the range as GLK).
What is the bargaining chip of the Mercedes GLC? Versatility, versatility and once again versatility. Do you want to drive more dynamically on curves? You turn on the Sport mode. Do you want to get off the asphalt? You turn on Offroad mode. This quick change of character is something that the previous version of the model could already do, but in the new one it is even more pronounced thanks to a few additions. However, before we go off-road, let's check how the new SUV from the star sign works on the road - after all, it is in such conditions that most customers will use it.
On the winding Spanish roads, it was obvious that the GLC is not a light machine. Fortunately, the weight oscillating around 2 t (and even 2.4 t in the PHEV versions ...) is quite successfully covered by the optional rear axle (steering angle up to 4.5 degrees), which provides the SUV with greater maneuverability and stability. . As a result, the car is pleasant to drive, although the steering precision and agility of the lower and lighter C-Class are out of the question.
That's the price SUV drivers pay for a larger, heavier and higher-set cabin. Suspension? Irreproachable! Thanks to the Airmatic air suspension (standard on plug-in hybrids, optional on other versions), the comfort is hard to complain about. Even in a sports setting, you can feel that Mercedes really puts comfort first. But the real masterpiece of this car is something else.
