History Of Petroleum Industry In Nigeria

The search for oil started in Nigeria in the Year 1908 by a German company called the Nigerian Bitumen Corporation in the former Ondo state as a result of the presence of oil seepage in a particular area there

The world wars; first and second slowed the effort of Shell D'Arcy and the current Shell British Petroleum.

There later resumed operation in 1947 around the Okitipupa area.

 

 

 

After an intensive exploration of crude, oil was finally found in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, Bayelsa State. This paved way for series of discovery around the coast of Nigeria which are; Afam, Ebubu, Bomu field Ughelli.

Nigerian first export of crude was at the Ughelli oilfield which it's production rate was 5,100 barrel per day.

Although before the discovery of crude took place at Oloibiri, Bayelsa State, the first oil well drilled in Nigeria was at the northeastern part of imo state, Ohio in the year 1951 and it was a dry hole(no crude found).

Many companies were now trooping into Nigeria to invest in their oilfield which made Shell BP had the sole concession right.

Hence, Oil prospecting licenses were then granted to other oil companies in order to increase the oil space.
