South Korean doctors strike is ongoing strike in South Korea , it started on February 2024 when the doctors were not satisfied with the new government policies. The government majored on increasing medical students enrollment, South Korea has the lowest ratio of doctors to population of any developed economy and the government is seeking to train hundreds of more doctors each year, an idea that the doctors doesn't support by saying they need more paying and better working conditions.
As a result of the strike, several doctors have failed reporting to work joined by their colleague proffesionals, furthermore patients in hospitals fail to be attended to and cancellation of treatments. The strike was fuelled by the Korean Medical Community composing Korean Medical Association, Korean Intern Resident Association and resident doctor's in various hospitals. The junior medic students addressed their grievance to Seoul High Court accompanying the strike. Unfortunately the court dismissed the doctors bid.
"Was dismissed as it was determined that they are not the direct party affected by the case's disposition." The court said in a statement.
While interviewing one of the residents, "Of course it takes alot of hard work and time to become a doctor. But it's a respected , and they have their pride, it seems wrong to do this by holding people's lives hostage." Said NA YOON- HEE . Ryu . O. Hada is an emergency trainee in Daejeon city. He says the legal work limit for South Korean doctors is 88 hours a week but he works as many as 126 hours. He argues that the government wants to train more doctors not to reduce the trainees burden but to staff new profit making hospitals.
Vice health minister Park Min-Soo said that the government is setting steps to suspend the licenses of the striking doctors, this includes a three-month suspension and even indictments for refusing the government back to work order. Unfortunately the doctors haven't responded to the order and they are even ready for the suspension or even quiting their medical jobs. A case that will highly impact the South Korean Medical services.
