The introduction of technology or basically ICT has since made the world live a better life, including educational perspectives whereby it has an impact on learning. In the past years learning was only done in contact or rather face to face ,but to make learning even more easier Learning Management Systems were invented.
These include Docedo , Blackboard Learn and Moodle to name a few. Learning Management Systems may have been invented to enhance learning yet it has some effectiveness as per individual's perspective. Here I’ll report about students’ views about Learning Management Systems.
During these days of COVID-19 , being in contact with another person became a risk to everyone which as a result disturbed learning. This lead to the introduction of Learning Management Systems in schools ,most importantly in institutes of higher learning. For University of Eswatini ,MOODLE was introduced as the LMS to be used for online learning. This helps as the university as a whole is safe from contacting the deadly disease, and it also helps academically.
Although the Learning Management Systems may be of great help since students are able to get notes or lecture slides posted by lecturers which are very helpful in covering a particular course, some students say the system is not user friendly. The system , Moodle for example, needs data bundles for it to work or function , which is practically a scarce resource since it may be unaffordable in some instances. Since every lecturer may post lecture slides or videos, that means approximately 1GB of data bundles is needed every single day and that kind of data bundle is not easily affordable ,that makes the system not suitable. It would have been more user friendly if the system was meant to be free to use .
Also, Many researchers have compared the performance of online students with students participating in traditional classrooms. Uzunboylu has found that the English language grammar achievement of the experimental groups’ subjects, who conducted English grammar exercises on the Web, was higher than the control groups’ subjects who conducted them using traditional methods. Schultz , who investigated online education at Virginia Community College, found that students liked the convenience of online education but disliked the lack of personal interaction. This proves the reliability of the system to be most helpful to students since some of them are not good listeners, which makes the traditional way of learning, which is going to class, less suitable for them.
In conclusion, we can say that Learning Management Systems can be satisfactory if students were to give themselves time to learn or adapt to the system because they may be against it due to the fact that the system is new to them. And also students should get to educate themselves on how to use the system.
