The Death Penalty As A Legal Anachronism And The Need For Its Abolition!

The death penalty is vestigial of the age of primitive savagery and epochs of military interregna which once blotted the political landscapes of modern nations in the annals of their political history.

It's unfortunate that most nations of the world today still practice this anachronism alongside other practices like abortions and shootings at unarmed civilians by government forces. These practices which cheapen human life are incongruous with the renewed emphasis on the value for human life by the United Nations Human Rights and human rights lawyers and Activists all over the world. Parliaments all over the world should follow the steps of the Parliament in Papua New Guinea which abolished the death penalty earlier in this year 2022.

I must vociferate the words of the Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Ravina Shamdasani that: "Globally, the death penalty has not been proven to be an effective deterrent, but individuals on death row, as well as their families, have suffered a range of human rights violations". I therefore call for the expungement and abolition of this inhuman practice which should be in oblivion in any modern legal system. I also add my voice to the call on the government of Singapore to commute the death sentence slammed on Roslan Bin Bakar and Pausi Bin Jefridin convicted in 2010 on charges of drug trafficking who were only informed in February 2022 of their imminent execution!

Ends.
