The 0rigin of the igbo people is of great antiquity. Various ancient art and craft found in the area

reveal that they have been residing in their present-day locations for thousands of years. The

Igbos make up one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. They occupy the south-eastern

part of Nigeria.

They can be found in Anambra, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu and some parts of Delta and Rivers states of Nigeria. They speak the igbo language which has various dialects. Igbo people are popularly respected for their business ideas, skills and trade proficiency

During pre-colonial era, agriculture was their major occupation. In terms of government,

Igbo communities had their individual freedom before the advent of the Bristish indirect rule

system. They had no kings, chiefs or overall ruler. The people were at the helm of their own

affairs. Each family had a male elder who offered counsel on matters

An association of each family’s male elder made up the community’s council of elders.

The council of elders gathered when needed. When community matters arose, general

council meetings were held and decisions are taken

The Obi ( considered as a king in igbo) of Onitsha (an Igbo land in Nigeria) was an

exception as he was in control of Onitsha land and some other communities had priest called

Eze, who were more of spiritual counsellors.

The Igbos tribal food are akpu and vegetable soup or oha soup, which is eaten by

almost all the tribes of Nigeria. The Igbos are one of the major tribes in Nigeria alongside

the yorubas and Hausa.
